What can I use the VPN for?

Accessing specific teaching or research resources

Some courses will require you to access teaching resources that are not generally available. You will be informed on your course when you will need to access the VPN and which teaching or research resources you should use.

Using AppsAnywhere

Some apps require a secure connection to the University network to obtain a licence to run. If you open AppsAnywhere without connecting to the VPN the majority of apps will show as unavailable. You need to connect to the VPN before you open AppsAnywhere to have access to these apps when off-campus. In the video

Note about AppsAnywhere for Mac users

AppsAnywhere only works in a Windows environment meaning that to use it on your own Mac you need Windows installed. For off-campus use, you should run both AppsAnywhere and the VPN in that environment. This means you should follow the VPN installation and configuration instructions for Windows. You can use Windows on your Mac by dual booting or by using Parallels. If you need Windows and don't have it installed on your Mac please see Free and Discounted software for information on how to get Windows 10 for free and Parallels at a discounted rate.

To use the VPN for any purpose other than AppsAnywhere on your Mac you do not need Windows. In this case you will need to install the VPN within your Mac OS.

To use the VPN on your Mac for both AppsAnywhere and other purposes such as to access specific teaching or research resources you will need to install the VPN in both your Mac OS environment and your Windows environment
